Hula Hoop and Starburst Scatterplots This year, I switched up the order a bit in Algebra 1 and moved creating scatter plots and lines of best fit from our Data Analysis Unit end of the year to our Linear Graphs and Inequalities Unit half way through the year. I have mixed feelings about this. I think that placing this skill in the unit on linear graphs shows my students a real-world application of linear graphs.
It also gave my students much-needed extra practice with point-slope form. Last year, I felt like revisiting linear graphs at the end of the year helped tie what we were doing during our data analysis unit back to what we had studied previously during the year. I didn’t have to do as much reviewing this year because my students are still in the thick of graphing linear equations.
So, where is the best place for this skill? I’m still not sure! We’re behind where we should be this year, so I only had a few days to completely address scatter plots.

Game Reviews Free Classroom Posters I’ve created this special page on my blog to house all of the posters I have created for my classroom over the past few years. I have made them free for you to download and use in your own classroom as a way to say thank you to the thousands of people I’ve stolen teaching ideas from on the internet. For each poster, I have tried to provide a PDF copy and an editable copy.
The PDF copy preserves my font choices, but you cannot edit it. If you download the editable copy, the fonts will change unless you have fonts I used installed on your computer. Almost all of the fonts I use can be downloaded from Font Squirrel.

Thanks for the dtailed post on this great strategy. Saw a teacher use it wuth a variation that i also liked. Students had been given long review to work on the night before. Discussion leaders What is it? Prior to class, students prepare quotes, questions, and insights from the course readings in order to lead a discussion. Give students an idea of about how long they can expect to facilitate a discussion in class. Each student should prepare to lead a discussion by 1 preparing at least two quotes from the reading they want to discuss in more detail 2 preparing two questions for class discussion and 3 offer two implications for the course.
Then during class, randomly select a student or two to lead discussion. References and Further Reading Meta-analyses of research on collaborative learning show largely positive effects across age levels and disciplinary fields Johnson et. In their review of the research, Barkley, Cross and Majorx report that “cooperative arrangements were found superior to either competitive or individualistic structures on a variety of outcome measures, generally showing higher achievement, higher-level reasoning, more frequent generation of new ideas and solutions, and greater transfer of what is learned in one situation to another” There are several explanations for the effectiveness of collaborative learning.
According to constructivist theories of learning , the multiplicity of views inherent in collaborative learning can generate cognitive conflicts, which in turn allow new ideas to be accommodated and incorporated in the cognitive system.
